Having been here for nearly 6 months we thought it was about time we gave a proper introduction to BarrKitchens designer Toby Patch. Toby is without doubt one of the cheeriest fellas we, at the Barr Group, have had the great pleasure of working with. So who is Toby and what does he get up to in an ‘ordinary' day at Field Farm?
First a bit of background: A very long time ago in a galaxy far far away (also known as 1992) a young Toby started on the bench doing his City & Guilds apprenticeship. There he impressed his tutors and achieved his advanced certificate. Bench carpentry was a natural career path for Toby; his father owns and runs a bespoke furniture company in Rye designing and building wonderfully unusual pieces for the home.
The more time Toby spent honing his skills in the workshop, the more interested and involved he became in the design side of the industry. A few years later and with a cache of valuable experience Toby found himself at Field Farm, BarrKitchens HQ. Frustrated with the limiting parameters imposed by high street kitchen companies and excited by the extent of individuality the company encouraged from its designers, he agreed to come and work with us.
Toby’s design ethos is encompassed his passion for tailoring each and every kitchen and his natural attention to detail – the perfect match for BarrKitchens.
An average day for Toby starts with the school run. Then after making a beeline for the Miele showroom coffee machine (just to make sure it is in perfect operational order and ready for customer visits of course!) he gets stuck into whichever exciting kitchen design is currently on his CAD. Right now, Toby is working on a large contemporary space where, as always, every single element must be carefully considered. The design incorporates a glass screen, requiring some joinery design and taking Toby back to his days spent between the between drawing board and the joinery bench.
A look at Pinterest and a packed lunch take up Toby’s lunch break (we do drag him into the coffee room for some down time and a quick chat as well!). Toby head space is currently deep in wall cabinetry, particularly that designed in a stepped style (see image). Using clever lighting and combining different finishes and materials on the step back to achieve depth, contrast and interest. Needless to say, this is something Toby has incorporated into his latest installation.
The afternoon disappears all too fast, in a flurry of site measures and showroom appointments, not to mention checking on workshop progress and current installations.
There is always time to pick up a bottle of red on the way home, to compliment Toby’s much talked about cooking, (yet to be experienced but greatly anticipated at Barr HQ). As we work alongside Toby we look forward to seeing his continued creativity and individual style shine through in each of his kitchen designs …and to sharing them with you.
