Did You Get Your Bake On?

The 2015 Great British Bake Off Final may have drawn the biggest TV audience this year but The Thame Food Festival took the prize for the biggest ever live audience at a free food festival.

BarrKitchens were so proud to be a part of the event - from the early planning stages right up to the BIG DAY. As always for the TFF the sun shone and Thame was teeming with exhibitors and visitors from far and wide.  Patron and TFF director Lotte Duncan and her amazing team pulled it off in style - “it just gets better every year!”

BarrKitchens designed and built the infrastructure for the TFF interview stage, where well-known foodies chatted to Lotte throughout the day. As always, honoured guest Raymond Blanc (also a Thame Food Festival Patron) drew in and inspired the crowd.

BarrKitchens designer, Sammy Foot, wanted to create a fun, new take on the Great British Bake Off style. A giant Victoria sponge layer cake was designed as part of the backdrop and was cleverly positioned to look as if it was sitting on the interview bench with a cartoon-esque life of its own. Vintage props and plants kindly lent by Thame flower shop Busy Lizzy finished the look.

As well as the interview stage Sammy designed a pop-up kitchen to fit upstairs in the town hall as the staging area for The Big Thame Bake exhibition, judging and of course afternoon tea - which involved selling and eating the entries! (all for a good cause with The Big Thame Bake entry fees going to the Thame Food Bank, a charity helping to provide food for local families in need).

The inaugural Big Thame Bake was organised by Cookery book author Jane Hornby along with the new Thame Belles WI group and she shared her perspective: “As a total cake head, I found this event very exciting; the standard of the baking was incredibly high and we were overwhelmed by the number of entries”

The Big Thame Bake offered a chance to meet some of the biggest names in the world of baking; judges include Great British Bake Off’s Frances Quinn, Louis Troyano, Miranda Gore-Brown, Lynn Hill - founder of the Clandestine Cake Club - Food Editor for BBC Good Food magazine, Cassie Best, and Jenny Royle from Squires Kitchen, Publishers of Cakes & Sugarcraft, Wedding Cakes and Bake & Decorate magazines.

If you'd like to hear more, Lotte Duncan’s Blog tells the inside story from the perspective of patron and organiser.  She is already busy teeing things up for next years TFF.

In the meantime the distinctive Big Thame Bake Kitchen is currently being installed and wired up for its next incarnation at the BarrKitchens showroom just outside Thame - with a few exciting additions…watch this space.

Huge thanks to Emma and Jonathan from ThameTV - for amazing images and video footage. They captured the magic of the whole event from early morning setup to after event drinks.  For more images of the day click here.
