Adaptable Living – a kitchen space designed for a growing family

Every lifestyle brings its own demands of a kitchen – the engine room of most homes. A busy family life is a case in point. What to cook? Where to store the army sized rations? Quick ways to prep and tackling the often monumental clear down …and all of this in an environment which is safe for little culinary enthusiasts or hungry teens. In creating a kitchen which can address these demands BarrKitchens Designer Toby Patch, with the help of the client family, took the bull by the horns. In conjunction with the functional requirements, the visual brief was to maintain a traditional country aesthetic to fit the internal architecture of the property and its surroundings.

Utilising every bit of storage possible, in addition to making sure that the kitchen had very distinct zones, was a focus for designer and client. All food storage is in one place with a bank of cabinets that not only conceal the fridge but also contain a full-height made-to-measure larder, easing the struggle of putting away groceries. There is the added bonus that when little hands appear searching for a yummy snack they will not have to go anywhere near the food preparation areas, avoiding hot appliances and sharp utensils. Tall cupboards were placed on the farthest side from the windows (traditional casements by BarrJoinery) with cabinetry finished in a light paint hue, capitalising on the kitchens stunning natural light.

Open storage and shelving works well in a busy kitchen: as well as being able to grab items at a glance it also sits at a high level out of small people’s reach. The island, functionally central to most family kitchens, also provides additional storage - in this case in the form of deep soft close drawers. As the family grows the island worktop provides the perfect spot for homework and family activities as well as place to congregate for laid-back social gatherings.

This is, of course, just one example of a flexible family space that will adapt and grow in line with its inhabitants. The BarrKitchens designers take pride in being able to create a unique made-to-measure kitchen around each client's particular lifestyle; spaces which won’t need updating every few years.
