For the past year or so, Richard & Jill Bushnell have been renovating their detached family home in Buckinghamshire, but when it came to the kitchen design they looked to Designer Toby Patch to bring their exacting vision to life. Both extremely busy professionals working at the forefront of the technology industries (Mr Bushnell, a director of a lighting company selling LEDs by the kilometre, Mrs Bushnell at the top of her field, last heard from jet-setting to Japan!), for this couple a high specification kitchen with little to no maintenance was essential.
The design started with a very clear idea, starting with no fussy door furniture. There was some deliberation over the placement of the kitchen, with many complete redesigns, but was finally settled with a kitchen that would be the central hub of the home, and gateway to the outside space framed by two sets of bi-folding door.
Toby opted for a handle-less design with shark nose edges; giving a very modern but tactile finish by using solid oak reveals on all handle details. Set back cabinetry above the antique mirror splash back, grain matched across the four cupboard doors, this not only ties in with the Oak handle reveals and solid oak drawer inserts but also adds depth and texture to the entire space. A warm white LED strip was inset into the cabinets, illuminating the splash back and worktop space below.
Design White Corian worktops by DuPontTM Corian® were chosen throughout. Corian is a solid nonporous, homogeneous surfacing material made of an advanced composite. Corian solid surfaces offer design versatility, functionality and durability. Corian is composed of 1/3 acrylic resin and 2/3 natural minerals. These minerals are composed of aluminium trihydrate (ATH) derived from bauxite, an ore from which aluminium is extracted. For high traffic areas, such as a kitchen or central island as used here, this is an ideal substance and absolutely effortless to keep clean.
There are many benefits of installing a Quooker tap much of which we go into great detail here, but in summary not only do they look great, they save time, energy and workshop space. For busy clients with a keen interest in technology, this was an absolute essential.
The cabinets were spray finished in a water-based paint for a smooth contemporary finish. Every part of this kitchen has been thoughtfully planned out to fit with the requirements of this high-spec low-maintenance busy family home, that is as practical for every day as it is a showstopper for entertaining.
