The 2016 May Ashfold Ball was themed ‘Midsummer Nights Dream’. Organiser Nin Dart and Creative Director Laura Miller invited BarrKitchens to be part of their amazing Midsummer Nights Dream set - a marquee transformed into an enchanted Midsummers forest - draped with ivy, complete with Oberon and his fairy clan.
The graphic design scheme was created by the talented team at Jyst Creative, who worked tirelessly with the imagery, from invitations to programs, setting the scene for the ivy-clad wonderland to come.
The BarrKitchens ‘bar’, last seen (looking very different) at Thame Food Festival, underwent a dramatic makeover. Little Greene paint in Custard, Mischief and Olive emulated the deep vivid hues of the forest. Draped with ivy and twinkling lights and interspersed with sprigs of deep pink french lilac, the bar created an eye catching entrance to the beautifully dressed Joseph Benjamin marquee.
Party goers were greeted with champagne and a BarrKitchens ‘magic potion’, a bright green melon liqueur cocktail which was said to make the recipient fall in love with the first person (or thing) they set eyes on… in many cases - our BarrKitchens bar itself!
Faces were painted and gradually, it seemed, even the guests became more ethereal looking and started to blend into the scheme. Dinner, by Cavendish Events, was superb – marinated salmon to start, followed by delicious lamb wrapped in pancetta – and the wine flowed freely all night. The two auctions led by the imposing figure of Oberon was in his element cajoling guests to bid generously and running the auction as a piece of theatre.
The highlight of the evening was a spontaneous performance by Tony Hadley who wowed everyone (and raised a considerable amount for the Ball’s causes) by singing two of Spandau Ballet’s greatest hits, True and Gold. Guests filled the dance floor, lapped it up and sang along as Tony gave a powerful and pitch perfect performance. It was fantastic! The dance floor proved popular all evening and the night flew by in a whirl
The hard work which had gone on behind the scenes in organising this fabulous event certainly paid off. Much fun was had by all and considerable funds were raised for this years chosen charity, The Maggie Keswick Jencks Cancer Caring Centre in Oxford. Well done to Nin, Laura and their other team members Pippa Collard & Sarah Chester and a big thank you from BarrKitchens for inviting us to be part of it.
If any guests would like to visit us at our Open Day on Saturday (18 th June) it would be a pleasure to tell you more about the unique way in which BarrKitchens are designed. We will be serving coffee or Pimms rather than magic potion!
